  1. April 2011 to date- Founder and Executive Director for Lifting the Barriers (LIBA)
  • Designed and Implemented projects (Women Inclusive Financial Empowerment (W.I.F.E), Learning Companion, EVERY Girl…Campaign) with support from volunteers
  • Recruit volunteers and staff to work with the organisation
  • Participated in partnership meetings and collaborative activities with other organisations and individuals
  • Designed Weekend Inclusive and School Holiday W.I. S.H project in line with the learning and research findings done in 2015
  • Developed The Teachers As Educators, Administrators, Caregivers and Healers (T.E.A.C.H ) Initiative program; this programs mentors teachers to play multiple roles and be sensitive to the plight of the children who come to school with baggage from home that continuously affects their learning

  • Taught English and Social Studies at Bofa and Makonjemare primary school as a volunteer teacher
  • Collected data needed for project design and implementation at Lifting the Barriers
  • Personally conduct the Weekend Inclusive and School Holiday (after school) lessons which provides academic and developmental support that children cannot get at home and in a normal school day
  1. April 2004 to October 2010: Area Manager, Plan International, Tharaka and Kilifi Development Areas (DAs) respectively.
  • Chaired the education development team in the office. I led the team in innovating the SchoolsCaN project that reached out to all stakeholders in the schools (parents, teachers, learners, administrators and local leadership). It also attracted huge funding.
  • Ensured Development Area (DA) complied with corporate governance systems and procedures.
  • Ensured that staff adhered to the duty matrix to avoid conflict of roles and interest especially on the finance and procurement roles.

  • Provide visionary leadership, coaching for results and support to the DA team in the management of programs, individual development and in the management of their performance.

  • Organised “Xplore Kenya differently” funding campaign initiative that combined relaxation, safari and village experience
  • Provided Leadership in the implementation of the 2 major programs – Educational Resources Development Program (ERDP) and Entrepreneurship and Employment Training Program (EETP)
  • Fundraising, report writing, carrying out programme needs assessment, carrying out and documenting research findings.

  • Visited primary and secondary schools to mentor them on the need to stay in school and complete school

  • Supporting youth, especially girls out of school to either start or manage a small business or those wishing to get in to wage employment, know how to do a cover letter, resume/CV and perfect their public speaking skills.
  • Visited informal settlements to spread awareness about personal health and hygiene, sanitation and birth control measures
  • Developed and Marketed program proposals on behalf of GEP.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Made it to the top 10 in the World (out of 8500 applicants) and became the only Kenyan and African to compete for the One million Dollar Global Teacher prize competition that was held in March 2015, in Dubai (http://www.varkeyfoundation.org). I was among the nine runners-up as the award went to an American.
  • Seat at the Global Teacher Nomination Academy of Varkey Foundation where I participate in the selection of Top 50 and Top 10 Global Teacher prize Nominees since 2015 to date
  • Member of the Global Teacher Alliance of Varkey Foundation
  • Was awarded fully paid Commonwealth scholarship to pursue Masters in Education and International Development at the UCL, London (formerly Institute of Education, University of London). I was among the ten East Africans selected out of the 2800 applications received.
  • Was recognised in a public function by H.E the Governor of Kilifi County in October 2015 as the Shujaa (Hero) for my contribution in education in reaching the disadvantaged children

  • While working for Plan International,
    • Was ranked the best performing Manager out of the 9 Managers in Kenya, thanks to my hands on leadership. New Managers recruited, were referred to me for orientation.
    • Have trained and provided on site support to over 1000 men and women using the Village Savings and Loans (VSL) model and the same has successfully been scaled up in Kilifi and replicated in other areas. Kilifi has the most successful table banking model now.
    • Have personally triggered communities using Community Led Total Sanitation approach which advocates for communities to stop open defecation and instead, build toilets and practice better hygiene standards. Again, Kilifi remained the most successful implementing rural district.

  • Strategic Planning: Supporting and facilitating strategic visioning and planning
  • Programme support and grant management: Advising implementing staff on grant requirements and procedures (including budgeting), reviewing project proposals, administering the grants, foreseeing implementation of projects including  facilitating monitoring and evaluation and reporting internally and to donors;
  • Training and mentoring: Designing and facilitating hands-on participatory planning, monitoring and evaluation processes  in  research, development, communication and advocacy;

PARTICIPATORY COMMUNICATION INITIATIVES INVOLVED IN

  • Participatory Video for Social Change: Led a team in charge of introducing participatory video as a valid method for research, documentation and communication.
  • Participatory Action Research and Advocacy: Led teams into finding out the structural causes of girl child sexual abuse in Kilifi and why it is still a silent crime.
  • Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Documentary: Led Institute of Development Studies ids, UK, local partners and communities to document the Kilifi CLTS process, outcomes, impact and role of partners and communities in the change process
